Horizon League Action Continues + Patriot League and Sun Belt Opening Rounds Tonight

If you have not done so already, make sure you save the links below, subscribe to the blog, and put it in your favorites, so you're always up to date. This is likely one of the last e-mails you're going to receive from me until we get to a championship game this weekend, or some sort of major-ish upset occurs. I intend on updating blog entries and the standings multiple times each day when I am able to do so, which will make for a lot of college basketball content as we approach March Madness. 🏀

I did need to make a few updates to some picks that were inaccurate, so you may see different standing today vs. yesterday. I reset the rankings order so the current rankings and previous rankings match, but going forward you'll see that change so you can determine if you're climbing up (or down) in the rankings. 📈

This is the quickest that conference tournament action has ramped up in a long time, we have 3 conferences in action on Day 2, and a few of us have at least one team playing. In the past we have typically been able to go at least three days before meaningful, elimination type games took place. I will break down each of the three conferences that are in action tonight. 👀

Horizon League

Every year I see something unique and strange and it is starting early this conference tournament season. Tonight, we technically start the quarterfinals, sort of, with (5) Green Bay vs. (6) Purdue Fort Wayne playing at 7:00 PM CST, but the other 3 quarterfinals games tip off tomorrow. I'm sure there is a reason for this if anyone would like to research it and get back to me, but you would think that a league would play all its quarterfinals games on the same day. I guess technically it is not the quarterfinals, but the Horizon League has a wonky bracket format this year, see below! Only Novakii has to sweat tonight as he is on 5-seeded Green Bay, which could end up being the first loss of our pool season.

Let's break down our pool picks in this league. (1) Wright State is the Horizon League regular season champion, and the favorite to win the tournament at 31.78%, but our pool favorite is (2) Robert Morris, making up 44.44% of our picks. Additionally, we have action on the 3, 4, 5 and 9 seeds, meaning plenty of opportunities for bonus points if the favorites go down flames.

Patriot League

The first round of the Patriot League tips off tonight with two games being played amongst seeds 7 - 10, and surprisingly we have some people in our pool that have action. Both games will take place at 6:00 PM CST with (7) Lafayette vs. (10) Holy Cross and (8) Bucknell taking on (9) Army West Point. In our pool, Conservative Doug has (8) Bucknell, which could end up being the first loss in our 2026 conference tournament pool if that game finishes before the Horizon League game. If Bucknell survives, they are rewarded with getting to play another academy school, 1-seeded Navy.

Sun Belt

In one of the all-time wildest brackets to ever exist, the Sun Belt begins the first of seven rounds tonight, yes seven rounds. I am a huge fan of this bracket style as it helps to reward higher ranked teams and ensures the conference has a good chance for its best team to represent them in the March Madness tournament. As far as the games go tonight, nothing impacts our pool as it is seeds 11-14 facing off, but I'll still be watching on ESPN Plus. At 5:00 PM CST, it is (12) Lousiana vs. (13) Georgia State and tipping off at 7:30 PM CST is (11) Old Dominion against (14) Louisiana-Monroe. To be conference tournament champion, one of those teams would have to win 7 games in 7 nights!
